After almost two years of pandemia, I started to wonder: are we taking good care of our relations as before? What keeps us united?
Life can unexpectedly surprise us, and we can suddenly get separated by our beloved ones by the distance of a sea or an ocean. That’s why we need to keep these relations healthy, especially in times of global crisis.
The starting point of the programme of this Cinemaissí 2021 focuses on the theme of human connections. Imperfect human relations with their beauty and their fears to go in-depth.
We will share the journey of Clara, Rosina, Joana, Ninosca, Norma, Cebaldo, Sebastián and others, and their connections or feelings of despair with their surroundings.
We have films: that succeed in Cannes (Clara Sola), films about the nostalgia from people forced to leave home looking for a better life, coming-of-age films to remind us how difficult to become a teenager, about historical events that point on the importance of taking a side and films tribute to our mothers. Current bold topics like the concern about the land that gave us birth, people who are fighting for a better life, sexual awakening, search of the identity, and in the end, trying to find the truth about ourselves.
Films about our humanity and what links us together with feelings like love, fear and suffering. And also hope.
All in all, we want to empower female directors: 50% of the feature films are from women, and more than 50% of the stories are the protagonists. And this is just the beginning. The path in this field is not equal and not that easy still, so it’s necessary to bring them forward, to tell the other side of the story.
Also, we want to give a space for all the family to have a magical experience together (El Libro de Lila) and start Latin American cinema for children from 7 years old.
Let’s start to embrace the new waves of Latin American cinema and get rid of old fashioned patriarchal stereotypes. Cinema has the skill of showing what unite us and the current changes that are happening in society. I believe cinema can initiate change. Do you want to join us?
