Cinema in Conversation: Cinemaissí x ARMA: Latin American Racism in Films
October 22 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pmFree
The Anti-Racism Media Activist Alliance (ARMA Alliance) joins Cinemaíssi once again for another amazing event! This time, together we host the session “Latin American Racism in Films: From Lived Experience to Anti-Racism Action”.
Before the discussion ARMA Alliance features two films: the fictional drama “Miriam Miente” (Miriam Lies, 2018, Dominican Republic) and the short documentary “Complexos” (2020, Brazil/Finland). Despite happening in different societies, the two films represent a mosaic of how racism manifests itself in Latin America and how people turn their experiences suffering from racism and discrimination into anti-racism action.
The screening of the films will be followed by a Cinema in Conversation -session between Dr. Leonardo Custódio (Åbo Akademi, ARMA Alliance) and Paloma Sandberg (Good Hair Day Helsinki). In the talk, Custódio (Afro-Brazilian) and Sandberg (Afro-Dominican/Afro-Finnish) reflect about how the films relate to their own lives and activism between Latin America and Finland.
The discussion is live streamed through Youtube.
ARMA Alliance is a #boldmaker initiative funded by the Kone Foundation.
