Permanencia voluntaria was a common way of experiencing cinema in Latin America during much of the twentieth century. Originating in Mexico in 1910, the practice meant that audiences were not limited to one film or one fixed screening. A single admission allowed people to remain in the cinema for several hours: someone could arrive while a film was already in progress and stay to watch the beginning they had missed when the programme started again.

Cinemaissí revisits the spirit of this long-lost tradition with a pre-festival free screening day at The Train Factory’s Market Hall in Helsinki. Come and experience cinema as an accessible communal space: a place to spend time, eat together, discover unfamiliar films and territories, and move freely between different cinematic worlds.

These free screenings are presented by Cinemaissí in collaboration with Klandestina (Cuisine & Bar) and the support of the Embassies of Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Portugal and Uruguay, bringing different cinematic perspectives together in a shared public space.

Come for a film, encounter another, stay a little longer.
