When a mine in northern Finland closes, Taisto Kasurinen is left unemployed and sets off south in a white Cadillac in search of another life. Helsinki offers little salvation: he is robbed, falls in love with a working single mother, lands in prison, and is gradually pushed from economic displacement into the absurd machinery of crime.

The second film in Aki Kaurismäki’s Proletariat Trilogy, Ariel distils precarity, romance, and escape into the director’s unmistakable language of austere images, Finnish tango, deadpan humour, and profound tenderness toward those living at society’s margins. What begins as a journey away from a collapsing northern industrial world ultimately opens onto an unexpected transatlantic connection with Mexico, turning escape into a passage between distant geographies.
